Murray struggled with injury during Wimbledon, losing in the semi-finals to Sam Querrey.

And today he confirmed his absence from Cincinnati claiming he still hopes to play at Flushing Meadows.

“Unfortunately I won’t be playing in Cincinnati as I continue my recovery,” he wrote on Facebook.

“I always enjoy playing there and I look forward to returning next year. I’m continuing to work hard on the court with the aim of being in New York.”

The US Open, the final major of the season, starts on August 28.

Murray also missed the Rogers Cup last weekend in Canada as he struggles to overcome the problems he encountered in the build up to Wimbledon.

Murray was stunned at Queen’s Club losing to Jordan Thompson in the first round ahead of his defence at SW19.

The world number one managed to stumble through the first week with victories over Alexander Bublik, Dustin Brown, Fabio Fognini, and Benoit Paire.

But he couldn’t get beyond big-hitting Querrey in the final four and has not played since.
