Visionary visual effects innovator and four-time Oscar winner Joe Letteri will receive the Georges Méliès Award at the 16th annual Visual Effects Society Awards, which will be handed out Feb. 13 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Letteri joined Weta Digital as VFX supervisor on The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and has since led the company’s creative work. He earned Academy Awards for best visual effects on Avatar, King Kong, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and The Two Towers.

He also received the Academy’s Technical Achievement Award for co-developing the subsurface scattering technique that brought Gollum to life along with four BAFTA Awards and six VES Awards. Additionally, Letteri is a recipient of the New Zealand Order of Merit, the Queen’s honor.

Of his selection for the Georges Méliès Award, which recognizes pioneering and lasting contributions to VFX, VES board chair Mike Chambers said: “He has consistently elevated not just the technical aspect of visual effects, but also the emotional. Joe has the extraordinary ability to create or combine technologies to brilliantly enhance the art of storytelling and has brought us some of the most memorable character-driven tales of all time.”

Previous recipients of the VES’ Georges Méliès Award include John Lasseter, Phil Tippett, Ed Catmull and Douglas Trumbull.
