A man has been arrested for the murder of missing University of Pennsylvania student Blaze Bernstein, with officers taking him into custody on Friday afternoon.

Samuel Lincoln Woodward, 20, a high school friend of Bernstein’s who picked him up the night he went missing, was taken into custody in Orange County, Calif.

Blaze’s body was buried in a shallow grave in the perimeter of the park,” Orange County Undersheriff Don Barnes said at a press conference on January 12, 2018.

“There was some water runoff that exposed a small portion of the remains that allowed us to locate him,” Barnes said, explaining that the heavy rain revealed Bernstein’s body. He said that they believed the body had been there the whole time.

Barnes also said that he did not know about the relationship between the two young men.

Bernstein disappeared on January 2, 2018 and his body was found a week later.

“This is a very tragic case,” Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said. He said the charges had not been determined yet.

“A young 19-year-old young man is dead. He had a fine life ahead of him that has been extinguished,” he said about Bernstein.

The District Attorney also spoke about Woodward’s family along with the Bernstein’s saying: “By all accounts, both of these families are good people whose lives have been turned upside down in this terrible way. They’re both in grieving situations.”

Bernstein’s mother shared the news about the man being arrested in a heartbreaking Tweet. “Finally,” she wrote. “My thoughts are: Revenge is empty. It will never bring back my son,” she said. “My only hopes are that he will never have the opportunity to hurt anyone else again and that something meaningful can come from the senseless act of Blaze’s murder. Now Do Good for Blaze Bernstein.”
