'Diamantino' Wins First Major Award at Cannes Film Festival

The surrealist film beat out six other movies to pick up the Nespresso Grand Prize at a ceremony on Wednesday night, May 16.

Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt’s surrealist film “Diamantino” has landed the first major prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The movie beat out six others to pick up the Nespresso Grand Prize at a ceremony on Wednesday night, May 16.

Actress Chloe Sevigny, Norwegian director Joachim Trier, and actor Nahuel Perez Biscayart were among the panelists who selected “Diamantino” for the top prize. There were other awards handed out to Benedikt Erlingsson’s Icelandic environmental drama “Woman at War” (SACD screenplay prize), and Rohena Gera’s drama “Sir” (The Gan Foundation Award).

Meanwhile, French actor Felix Maritaud took home the Louis Roederer Foundation Rising Star Award for his role in “Sauvage“.

The festival’s main awards, including the Palme D’or, will be presented at the Grand Palais in Cannes on Saturday night, May 19.
