Did You Know Maggie Smith and Samuel L. Jackson Are Friends?

Sometimes you just need an afternoon pick-me-up, and boy does Samuel L. Jackson have just the medicine for you this Friday. In a new interview, the Oscar-nominated actor reveals that he is friends with Downton Abbey star Maggie Smith. The trivia comes up innocently enough, when Jackson is asked to identify his dream co-star.

“I still want to do a scene with Maggie Smith,” Jackson replies, in a conversation with People. “Maggie’s one of my favorite people. We hang out or go to dinner.”

In the words of Jackson himself, “Who’d a thought it??!!”

And why shouldn’t the actors be friends? Aside from being accomplished and prolific, both are refreshingly blunt, can wither enemies with a single line reading, and are chemically incapable of suffering fools. They are revered by master directors and feared by freshmen filmmakers. Having proven themselves long ago, they seem to cherish their hard-earned right to say “no.” (She refuses selfies and corsets; he refuses extra takes.)

They’ve battled snakes at high altitudes onscreen—his, on the plane, and hers, the top tier of British aristocracy. They are also both wickedly funny, and have played immensely quotable badasses in formal wear.

Still don’t believe it?

Fortunately, Jackson has provided photographic evidence in the form of a selfie—which not only proves that Smith and Jackson dined together, but that Jackson is a good enough friend to be pardoned from Smith’s strict no-selfie rule.

The Instagram shows Jackson and Smith in May 2016 dining with a few other companions including their mutual co-star Sir Michael Caine. (Smith and Caine co-starred in 1978’s California Suite and 1998’s Curtain Call, while Jackson and Caine, who have the same agent, teamed up for 2014’s Kingsman: The Secret Service.)

The above meal does not seem to be the first dinner shared by the unlikely duo. The year before, Jackson casually dropped Smith’s name in an interview with The Guardian, as in, “When I was in London recently, I had dinner with Maggie Smith.”

Now can someone please write a script for both Smith and Jackson?
