Swiss ace Federer claimed the 97th singles triumph of his career at the Rotterdam Open last month to return to world No 1.

That made him the oldest No 1 in ATP history at the age of 36 after five years off of top spot.

And with 1,000 points to defend here, Federer must reach at least the semi-finals in Indian Wells to protect his place at the summit.

While rival Rafael Nadal has withdrawn through injury, his fourth-round exit to Federer last year means he only drops 60 points – with Federer currently 600 ahead of the Spaniard.

Federer, a 20-time Grand Slam champion, is looking for a record sixth Indian Wells title at the Masters 1000 event with Novak Djokovic among those looking to deny him.

The Serbian, also a five-time winner at the tournament, is back from an elbow injury that has kept him out since the Australian Open.

Nadal, Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray are among the tour’s star names who will be absent.
