Nadal bounced back from his Madrid Open exit to Dominic Thiem by breezing past Bosnian qualifier Damir Dzumhur 6-1, 6-0 yesterday.

That pits the World No 2 against Canadian prospect Shapovalov as the seven-time Italian Open winner looks to win the one clay-court event he missed out on last year.

The 31-year-old must also go all the way at Foro Italico in order to regain top spot in the ATP Rankings from rival Roger Federer.

Nadal would face the winner of German Peter Gojowczyk’s clash with home favourite Fabio Fognini in the final eight if he were to win.

The second bracket sees Novak Djokovic look to make the quarter-finals of an event for the first time in 2018.

The Serbian is looking for three successive wins for just the second time this season and faces off against Albert Ramos-Vinolas after the Spaniard’s three-set thriller with John Isner, which spanned 39 games.

In a packed fourth quarter, Kyle Edmund will hope to continue his excellent run of form but faces a huge challenge against Madrid Open winner Alexander Zverev.

Next Generation prodigy Zverev won his third Masters 1000 title last week, where Edmund eliminated Djokovic but lost to Shapovalov in the quarters.

Juan Martin del Potro potentially awaits Edmund or Zverev in the next stage with the Indian Wells-winning Argentine facing Belgium’s David Goffin.
