Hitting the road for the holidays can be hard enough when it’s just us humans. Add a four-legged friend to the mix and your to-do list could expand exponentially. Luckily, there are pet enthusiasts in the tech space consistently working to make it easier (and more entertaining) for us all to enjoy the holiday season with our furry family members.

A calm owner makes for a calm pet. Be prepared and mindful and you’re all sure to have a happy holiday season.

Sit, Stay

If your plans involve a hotel stay, BringFido.com makes it easy to search pet-friendly hotels in every destination. Complete with each accommodations’ requirements, BringFido lists known fees of each establishment and saves you the trouble of calling around to ensure your pup can come along.

A personal favorite service of mine is Rover.com. Rover offers a vetted community of pet-lovers in your area who are willing and able to help out with your pets’ needs. Each member undergoes a background check and can complete further Rover.com pet certifications. You’ll find someone for every pet-sitting need, from a daily walk to boarding in their home or yours. Dog boarding can get quite costly, but Rover.com keeps it simple. The app allows you to receive photos during their stay together and you can pay through the app. At the end of every pet staycation, Rover.com will even send you a fun little video created from the photos taken and posted.

Pets in Flight

Many people aren’t huge fans of airplanes, so it’s not surprise that pets can have anxiety when it comes to air travel, too. Rather than tranquilizing your pet, a practice that’s sometimes discouraged by the vet community due to possible complications, try to make it as comfortable as possible for your pooch or kitten. For crated pups, Snoozer carries a space-aged pet crate liner made from NASA-developed Outlast® Fabric material. This futuristic puppy padding works to manage the buildup of a pet’s heat by mitigating temperature swings. The result is a more balanced temperature, which is ideal when they’re forced to remain stationary in the air for extended periods of time.

And if your little guy or gal is on the bigger side and has to ride underneath the plane, Delta Cargo offers real-time GPS and temperature monitoring so you can keep a watchful eye on your pet throughout the flight.

Road Dogs

If your holiday path takes you on the open road, car safety is always of paramount concern when it comes to our animals. Keep your pooch safely planted in the back with Kurgo’s Auto Grass. Auto grass simply sticks to the console of your car to deter your pet from trying to climb into the front seat. Take it a safe step further and secure your pup to the backseat with a safety harness like Pet Ninja’s adjustable dog seatbelt.

Following Tracks

Whether you’re visiting family out of town or hosting the holiday festivities in your own home, all the ruckus might have you feeling extra careful when it comes to your fur-babies. Tagg GPS Pet Tracker is an easy-fit dog and cat collar attachment that tracks your pet and sends email and text alerts if they happen to get loose. You can also monitor their daily exercise levels and view an interactive map from the app to find your pet.

Cat-lovers will especially enjoy the Eyenimal Cat Videocam. You’ll get a cats-eye-view when you attach this lightweight pet cam to your cat’s collar. Complete with 2 recording modes, including motion detection and a 4GB built-in flash memory, you’ll finally know what it’s like to watch over your home from the top of the refrigerator.

Face-to-Face Time

Ever wish you could just ring your pet while you’re away? Now you can with pet gadgets like Pet Chatz. Pet Chatz is a digital daycare for pets left home alone. Fully equipped with HD video interaction, games, DOGTV, treat dispenser and even aromatherapy, Pet Chatz can calm your nerves when you’re away and give you the face time you’d otherwise miss with your four-legged friend. For even more interactive fun, add the PawCall accessory and allow your pet to call you when he or she is feeling a little lonely. You read that right: Your pet can call you!

Smart Food

If you plan on having company coming and going throughout the holiday season, or if you know you’ll be running around or stuck in the kitchen for extended periods of time, a smart feeder might be the best way to keep Fido fed. Petnet has a smart feeder for dogs and cats to ensure your pets are happy and never hungry. The Petnet feeder syncs to an app that allows you to set a feeding schedule and get alerts when your pet is fed. It also has a backup battery, food level sensor and the ability to dispense food remotely if you know you won’t make it home in time.

High-tech Fetch

The future is officially going to the dogs regarding the once-simple game of fetch. Still in its developmental phase, PlayDate is the world’s first pet camera in a smart ball. PlayDate will allow you to play with your dog or cat from anywhere in the world using the smart ball you control from your mobile device.

Already in market is the interactive ball launcher, iFetch. iFetch can keep your dog engaged for hours by automatically launching toy balls repeatedly if they keep returning to the launcher.

Bark the Basics

No matter what the holiday season has in store for you, keep your pet safe by remembering the basics.

  • Clear travel plans with your vet
  • Always remember food, water, meds, bed, litter, bowls, paperwork etc.
  • Leave enough time for pooping and playing before longer journeys

Most of all, don’t be nervous. A calm owner makes for a calm pet. Be prepared and mindful and you’re all sure to have a happy holiday season. And if your four-legged friend is very well behaved, you might even be inclined to buy this super smart dog house from Samsung. Because every dog deserves a day at the spa.
