Professor Stephen Hawking is now at one with the universe he spent his entire career studying.

The wheelchair-bound Hawking, who passed away Wednesday (March 14) at his home in Cambridge, aged 76, was the most recognizable theoretical physicist on the planet.

Despite a decades-long battle with motor neurone disease, which took away his ability to write, walk and, by the 1970s, speak, Hawking became a leader in his field and a best-selling author. Indeed, he has been described as one of the greatest thinkers on the planet and one of the brightest theoretical physicists since Albert Einstein. In 2002, Hawking was ranked No. 25 in the BBC’s poll of the 100 Greatest Britons.

His life story was retold for the big screen in 2014 for James Marsh’s The Theory of Everything, which earned its lead Eddie Redmayne the Oscar for best male actor, and his book A Brief History of Time was a worldwide bestseller selling more than 10 million copies.

Hawking also made appearances on The Simpsons, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Futurama and The Big Bang Theory. His distinctive synthesizer voice was recorded for the Pink Floyd song “Keep Talking” and in 2015 he contributed the dialogue for a special Record Store Day release of Monty Python’s “Galaxy Song.”

World leaders, musicians and celebrities turned to social media to pay their respects to the famous scientist.
