Nadal has had problems with both knees in the past and had to pull out of the Paris Masters two weeks ago mid-tournament.

His right knee left him unable to train properly but he insisted upon attempting to take part in this week’s ATP World Tour Finals.

However, the Spaniard announced immediately after his three-set defeat to David Goffin that he would have to call time on his season because of the problem.

But he seemed optimistic that he would be dealing with a familiar problem and that he would be able to target January as a return date from the injury.

“I know what I have to do,” Nadal said.

“I know all the things that happened in the past when I had these things, and I know the treatment that I had to do.

“I know the periods of time that I need to work.

“Then if the treatment works or not, we will see.

“The good thing is nothing new.

“Everybody of my team, we have the right experience on this thing.

“We hope to manage it well, to have the right rest, the right work, and try to be ready for the beginning of the next season.”

But Nadal was understandably downbeat and admitted he was frustrated to have been denied yet another chance to win his first ever ATP World Tour Finals title.

“I’ve missed [this event] too many times in my career,” Nadal added.

“But that’s how it works, my career, at the same time. I can’t complain.

“I feel very lucky about all the things that are happening to me.”
