Rafael Nadal is one of the most successful tennis players of all time – and like Roger Federer – does not seem to be fading with age.

The 31-year-old had a stellar campaign last year, winning the French Open and US Open to reinstate himself as the ATP world No 1.

And he thinks his success is all thanks to his uncle Toni Nadal who coached him from a young age and helped him handle the pressure of being at the top.

“I think I have practised all my life at high intensity, so that helps in the important moments during matches,” he said at a sponsor event for Mapfre.

“I also believe that having my uncle behind me helped me.

“I got used to playing with little pressure during practice.

“I feel that all the education I received when I was a kid also helped.”

Nadal has been forced to handle pressure already this season, as Federer is gunning for his world No 1 crown.

The Spaniard had to withdraw from the Australian Open with a leg injury, meaning the Swiss has now closed the gap in the ATP rankings.

However, Nadal expects to be back in action later this month and is targeting the Mexican Open in Acapulco to make his return.

“Like in all the injuries, I am working to remain on schedule,” Nadal added.

“So far my calendar is the same and I plan to travel to Mexico to play in Acapulco. I am going to play what makes me happy.”
