The pair are on course to meet on Sunday in a mouthwatering showdown in China.

Nadal battled through to the semis today with a win over Dimitrov – although he didn’t have it easy.

The Bulgarian caused Nadal problems throughout and it took a single break in the decider to separate the pair.

Nadal takes on Cilic tomorrow while Federer is in quarter-final action against Richard Gasquet later today.

The possibility of a Federer-Nadal final was discussed by Sky Sports tennis host Marcus Buckland today.

And it was then where Croft brought up Dimitrov’s efforts as a factor in Federer’s favour.

She said: “One of the things Mats Wilander always used to talk about was how frustrated he’d get with opponents who didn’t soften up great players for their next match.

“In many ways Dimitrov may have created some softening up, I guess you could call it.

“We did see a little bit of doubt from Nadal – more than we’ve seen in the last couple of weeks.

“There was shakiness on the forehand, drawing in the margins.”

Despite Dimitrov going down to defeat, his performance turned Croft’s head.

She said: “It was a terrific contest. I thought Grigor did so incredibly well. It was a level up from what we saw last week.

“He pushed Nadal to some tense situations in the final set.

“I thought he may come out on top in this match but when it really came push to shove it was Nadal who came up trumps.”
