Roger Federer is approaching the twilight of his playing career but shows no sign of slowing down.

The 36-year-old has already won the Australian Open this season and is on target to regain his place as the world No 1 this month.

And tennis legend John McEnroe has admitted he is in awe of the Swiss and is jealous of his temperament and never-ending love for the sport.

“If you were to pick one thing which I was jealous about it would be his absolute love and joy to be out there playing,” the American told Sky Sports.

“He has this unique ability even during times of struggle to brush things off more easily and that’s an incredible quality to have.”

And McEnroe believes Federer – despite his advancing years – is now a better player than  he ever was in the past.

“It’s still beyond belief and one of the craziest things that I’ve ever seen in the 25 years that I’ve been doing commentary and the additional 15 I played,” he added.

“To see a guy at that age and that level and play better than he did, for me, at 28.

“I don’t understand how the hell he’s doing it, but it’s truly amazing to watch.”

Federer can become the oldest world No 1 this month if he reaches the semi-finals of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Holland.

He will take the crown from Andre Agassi who held top spot in the ATP rankings aged 33 years and 131 days.
