The win saw Federer ensure he will remain world No 1 ahead of Rafael Nadal going into the Miami Masters next week.

But it was also the sixth tournament where he has won 60 or more matches.

Prior to this week’s event at Indian Wells, Federer has 94, 65, 91, 82 and 66 wins at the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, US Open and Halle respectively.

And with his four wins so far this week, Federer moved 61 victories at the Masters 1000 event.

Speaking after beating Chung, Federer asked if he was aware of his latest feat and the Swiss ace was in a nonchalant mood.

Federer told reporters: “Sounds like a lot, but at the same time, I don’t know how many people have done that or — I mean, when you’re in the game for long enough and successfully enough, these things just tend to happen, I believe.

“It’s not something you can ever chase or — yeah, it just shows me that I have played Indian Wells a lot, I have liked it a lot, and I kind of like the conditions here.

“I guess what I like about these six different tournaments you talked about, they are all very different from one another, so that makes me very happy that I can play in different conditions, different situations with weather, surfaces, if you like.

“But to get to that number, you have to play the event a lot. Otherwise, you’ll never get there.

“So I have been also fortunate enough to maybe not be injured in this time of year too often, which has helped as well.”
