Roger Federer is currently taking time off from the clay court season as he begins his early preparations for Wimbledon in July.

The 36-year-old took victory at the Australian Open back in January but for the second season in a row decided to skip the French Open in order to prepare for the summer schedule.

That means Federer will be putting in extra hours on the court with his coach Ivan Ljubicic.

But Ljubicic says one of the hardest parts of his job is trying to improve a player that many consider to be the greatest to ever grace a tennis court.

“My work with Roger is complicated, it’s very complicated to manage to improve such a player,” he said.

“But the easiness, transferring a simple idea to the player covers an important part.”

The 20-time Grand Slam champion currently sits second in the world rankings behind Rafael Nadal.

Despite them both struggling with injuries in recent years, rarely has a player pushed either of them off top spot.

With Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray also having injury problems, questions have been asked over who could challenge the four giants of the game.

And Ljubicic has his money on current world No 28 Borna Coric.

“They are close. Borna (Coric) already beat (Andy) Murray and (Rafael) Nadal and made Roger struggle a lot in Indian Wells by playing so well,” Ljubicic said.

“But it is one thing to play a match well, to win or to get closer to beating them, but it is another thing to beat them several times, on the most important stages like Grand Slams.”

Coric is currently competing in the Monte Carlo Masters alongside Djokovic and Nadal.
