Historically, the third quarter, which includes the summer months of July and August, attracts the most visitors to the UK and far outperforms the rest of the year in terms of both holiday numbers and spending. However, £6.5bn is not only the highest figure on record for the April-to-June quarter in at the ONS, it would also have bettered peak-holiday season in 2012.

The fall in the strength of the pound against the euro clearly had an impact. Some 313,000 more European residents travelled to the UK for holidays compared to the same period in 2017.

Close behind was the US, with 252,000 additional holiday makers and there was also a small rise in US business visitors, which rose by 30,000 to 251,000.
