England captain Joe Root speaks ahead of the third Ashes Test about how his side is progressing and the upcoming milestone for Alastair Cook

Joe Root won the toss at the WACA and did not make the same controversial choice he had at Adelaide Oval, instead choosing to bat as England fight to stay alive in the Ashes series.

England named an unchanged side for what is expected to be the last Ashes Test ever played at the WACA, and the pitch on offer showed some grass but also a few cracks on the first morning.

“There is a bit of live grass on here and it might do a little bit, so I think we have to really focus on playing well in the first session in particular,” Root said at the toss. “We know how crucial first-innings runs are.”

Australia made one change as expected, including allrounder Mitchell Marsh for his first Test since the tour of India earlier this year. Batsman Peter Handscomb was left out to accommodate the extra bowling option.

“The stats here over the last couple of years have shown that we’ve need to bowl a lot, and we want to keep our three bowlers up, so we’ve gone with that option,” captain Steven Smith said.

Australia 1 Cameron Bancroft, 2 David Warner, 3 Usman Khawaja, 4 Steven Smith (capt), 5 Shaun Marsh, 6 Mitchell Marsh, 7 Tim Paine (wk), 8 Mitchell Starc, 9 Pat Cummins, 10 Josh Hazlewood, 11 Nathan Lyon.

England 1 Alastair Cook, 2 Mark Stoneman, 3 James Vince, 4 Joe Root (capt), 5 Dawid Malan, 6 Moeen Ali, 7 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Craig Overton, 11 James Anderson
