British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has offered an apology after facing criticism for leaving D-Day commemorations in France on Friday to attend a national television interview in the UK – where he heavily criticized the opposition party that stayed overseas.

“The last thing I wanted to do was cause anyone any hurt or upset, which is why I apologize unreservedly for the mistake that I made,” Sunak said during an interview at a pub in West Sussex, England on Monday.

“I just hope that veterans and others can find it in their hearts to forgive me for that and also consider my record when it comes to supporting our armed forces with a historic increase in investment,” he added.

Having called a snap election in the UK, less than two weeks prior, Suank was met, largely, with negativity for his actions last week, with some questioning why he was prioritizing his political campaign and had left the country’s D-Day representation in the hands of British Foreign Secretary David Cameron.

Addressing the controversy over the weekend, Cameron said, “these events or all about the veterans and he doesn’t want politics to get in the way,” further suggesting Sunak’s trip back to the UK was a “longstanding plan.”
