Russia's most prominent jailed opposition politician, Alexei Navalny, was shown on a TV screen during a court hearing on Wednesday 10 January, for the first time since he was moved to a new prison. Navalny appeared to be in a good mood and was seen joking with journalists, who spoke to him via video link in a room miles away from where he was being held. The dissident was transported to the IK-3 penal colony in Kharp in the Yamal-Nenets region, about 1,200 miles (1,900 km) north-east of Moscow, on 25 December, his supporters have said. Also known as the Polar Wolf colony, it is considered to be one of the toughest prisons in Russia
