Andre Wisdom ‘out of intensive care following surgery’ after knife attack in Liverpool, confirms Derby County CEO

Derby County defender Andre Wisdom is out of intensive care and recovering in a general ward at hospital following surgery after he was stabbed and robbed in Liverpool.

The Championship club confirmed on Monday that the 27-year-old was the victim of an unprovoked attack in Toxteth in the early hours of Sunday.

Reports have claimed Wisdom was stabbed in the head and the buttocks by his attackers, who stole his watch

He was assaulted as he made his way back to his car after visiting relatives, having helped Derby to a 2-1 victory over Reading just hours earlier.

Incredibly, the former Liverpool player is said to have got back in his car despite his stab wounds – reportedly to the head and buttocks – and driven back to his home in St Helens, around 11 miles and a 30 minute drive away, before going to hospital.

Club owner Mel Morris has said he is ‘shocked and disgusted’ by the incident.

talkSPORT were joined by Derby CEO Stephen Pearce to provide an update on Wisdom’s condition on Tuesday afternoon.

And the Rams chief told White and Sawyer: “Thank goodness, he’s a very lucky guy.

“He’s out of intensive care now, he’s recovering in hospital and we hope to get him out, get him back and support him as soon as we can.

“We don’t know the full extend of his injures as yet, it’s early days, but we hope they aren’t too long lasting.

“But he’s very lucky indeed.

“He was operated on on Sunday and he is recovering now on the general ward. Hopefully he’ll be out very soon.

“We’ve been in regular contact and are speaking to his family members, and we’re going to support him in any way that we can.

“Andre has been with us for a long time now, he’s very much part of the Derby County family, and we all look after each other.”

On the reports Wisdom drove home after the attack, Pearce confirmed: “That’s our understanding.

“He’s clearly a warrior on the pitch and has showed real tenacity to get himself home to safety and to hospital.”

He also admitted the incident has shaken up the dressing room, especially after they were riding high after their back-to-back wins over Millwall and Reading.

But Pearce says the players are now focused on putting on a strong show for their absent teammate in their next game against Preston on Wednesday.

He added: “To go from the elation from our win against Millwall last week, to this news about Andre…

“I think it’s actually spurring the guys on and pushing them even more to want to succeed.

“I’m sure they’ll go out tomorrow night against Preston with a performance that’s worthy of Andre, who I’m sure will be watching.”
