Aston Villa sign Chelsea midfielder on loan for remainder of 2020/21 season

Ross Barkley has completed a season-long loan move to Aston Villa.

Just hours after being among the substitutes as Chelsea were defeated by Tottenham in the Carabao Cup, Barkley heads to Villa Park for the remainder of the 2020/21 campaign.

The 26-year-old former Everton player had made three appearances for the Blues this season.

But Frank Lampard has been keen to cut down his squad following a huge summer spending spree, that has seen Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner among eight new arrivals.

An Aston Villa statement read: “Aston Villa is delighted to announce the signing of Ross Barkley on a season-long loan from Chelsea.”

Manager Dean Smith added: “Capturing a player of Ross’s quality is a real coup for our club and I am certain he will thrive here and improve our team.”

Barkley joined Chelsea from boyhood club Everton in January 2018 for £15million and has made 52 appearances for the Blues during his two-and-a-half seasons in west London.

The England international, a recipient of 33 caps, will hope to rediscover his best form at Villa Park having never truly lived up to his potential with Chelsea.

For a long time at Everton Barkley was considered one of England’s brightest prospects – being compared to Paul Gascoigne – but he’s now 26 and needs to kickstart his career.

He will hope to achieve this at Villa, who have enjoyed a strong summer of recruitment, adding key signings such as Matty Cash, Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Martinez and Bertrand Traore on permanent deals.

Barkley leaves Chelsea having scored 11 goals and assisted a further 11 in 86 appearances

Barkley follows on a loan basis and could make his Aston Villa debut against Everton’s fiercest rivals Liverpool, with the reigning Premier League champions visiting Villa Park on Sunday.

He is unavailable for Thursday’s Carabao Cup visit of Stoke, having already played in the competition for Chelsea this season.
