Aymeric Laporte 'to switch international allegiance from France to Spain' as Man City star eyes spot in La Roja's Euro 2020 squad

Aymeric Laporte will reportedly represent Spain at Euro 2020 this summer following a personal request from La Roja boss Luis Enrique.

The France-born Manchester City defender has made a total of 51 appearances for Les Bleus at youth level but the player, who turns 27 later this month, has yet to play for the senior side.

Laporte is reportedly ready to switch sides internationally

He was born in the French Basque Country but Marca claim he is eligible for Spain after being handed a Spanish passport.

The report says that Enrique requested the possibility of Laporte being able to represent Spain, who have been European champions three times, a week ago.

It adds that both the player and FIFA have given their approval for the centre-back to play for Spain this summer but a final procedure with the latter is still awaiting completion.

It’s understood Laporte has been on the Spaniard’s radar since August 2016 when Julen Lopetegui had taken charge.

Enrique is set to name a 26-man squad for this summer’s finals on May 21.

Should Laporte get the nod it would see Spain’s central defensive options become significantly strengthened. They already boast the likes of Sergio Ramos, Eric Garcia, Pau Torres and Inigo Martinez.

Laporte has made 27 appearances for Pep Guardiola’s Man City this season and scored the decisive goal in their triumph over Tottenham in the Carabao Cup final.

He was last called up to France’s squad in August 2019, although he withdrew two days later with a knee injury which ruled him out for a large part of the season.

France boss Didier Deschamps suggested as recently as November that Laporte could continually not be selected.

Asked why Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma was called up for their international fixtures at the time, Deschamps said: “There’s competition everywhere.

“Kurt has been with us for a while, he’s been called up many times but hasn’t played that much. If I pick him it’s because I think he’s better than the other people because of what he’s doing at Chelsea.

“He had a few injuries in a row but now he’s been very fit for a while, he’s very calm, so he’s here.”
