Billy Gilmour compared to Chelsea teammate N’Golo Kante as Jose Mourinho and Steve Clarke hail Scotland kid for man-of-the-match display against England

Not bad for your first competitive Scotland start, Billy Gilmour.

The 20-year-old Chelsea midfielder stepped up to the plate in a way that no England player could, as Scotland took a well-earned 0-0 draw from Wembley at Euro 2020.

Gilmour bossed the midfield against the Three Lions

Gilmour was deservedly named Man Of The Match after a performance full of class, with and without the ball.

He disrupted opposition attacks and set his team away like he’d been doing it at major tournaments for years, with a maturity and presence of someone far older (and taller).

A bit like his Blues teammate N’Golo Kante, according to Netherlands defender Patrick van Aanholt.

And there was even higher praise for Gilmour from former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, who gave his verdict to talkSPORT at full-time.

“The kid Gilmour was the difference,” Mourinho said. “He was always showing, he wanted the ball under the pressure.”

Meanwhile, Gilmour’s manager Steve Clarke, Mourinho’s former assistant at Chelsea, must’ve been feeling pretty vindicated for finally picking the young star.

“He hasn’t got nerves,” Clarke told talkSPORT. “He’s from the same part of Ayrshire as me. I know Billy well and I know he’s well thought of at Chelsea.

Gilmour had everything England lacked in the game

“It was just picking the right moment to put him in the team. I thought the balance of the team from the back to the front was good tonight and it showed in the performance.”

And his captain Andy Robertson went a step further after Gilmour’s incredible performance, which kept Scotland’s hopes of progressing to the knockout stages alive.

He told ITV: “Right up there [as one of the best performances in a Scotland shirt].

“I spoke to him in hotel today and just looked at him and nothing fazes him.

“I believe he can have as many caps as he wants for Scotland, he has a huge future ahead but the here and now is pretty good as well.”
