Dana White hits out at UFC referee Chris Tognoni saying decision in Herman vs Rodriguez fight was 'one of the most disgusting things' he's ever seen

UFC Fight Night from UFC’s APEX facility in Las Vegas was largely a success on Saturday.

Plenty of great bouts at the top of the card saw a show with little star power overachieve, but a controversial finish in an earlier light-heavyweight clash between Ed Herman and Mike Rodriguez has made all the headlines.

Referee Chris Tognoni became the centre of attention for all the wrong reasons – as is so often the case with officials.

Herman was hanging on by a thread when Rodriguez landed a crushing blow to the body in the second round.

Herman went down as if he had been hit in the groin and the referee allowed him time to recover.

The 39-year-old used nearly all of his five minutes to collect himself and recover. He then went on to submit Rodriguez with a kimura in the third round and claim the unlikeliest of victories.

Naturally, having seen the replays, there has been widespread outrage that Herman was not only allowed to continue, but Rodriguez wasn’t awarded the stoppage victory.

UFC president Dana White did not sugarcoat it in the aftermath and even said UFC had given Rodriguez his win money.

“That’s the most disgusting thing that I’ve ever seen,” White said of Tognoni’s decision to halt the fight for a low blow.

“Listen, if the referee is that stupid that he didn’t see that wasn’t a low blow, Ed Herman’s job is to get in there and win a fight, and he did what he had to do,” White added.

“It’s one of the most disgusting, bad calls that I’ve ever seen in my life. [Rodriguez] finished Ed Herman tonight and then loses the fight.”

Speaking after his win, Herman weakly claimed he wasn’t sure where he got hit and he’d have to look back at it before commenting.

“I don’t know where I got hit, but I know I was hurt and I went down,” he said. “I don’t know if it was the groin or the body. All I know is I went down. I’d have to watch the tape and see how bad it was.”

As all men know: if you get hit in the groin, you know about it.

Herman has his hand raised in victory and Rodriguez still had the class to clap – White said the loser would still get his money because, in his words, ‘he won the f***ing fight’
