Dani Ceballos is 'average' and 'too weak' for Premier League and Mikel Arteta MUST use Mesut Ozil instead at Arsenal, Tim Sherwood claims

Arsenal playmaker Dani Ceballos is ‘too weak’ for the Premier League and will get found out this season, according to former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood.

The Spain midfielder has returned to the Emirates for a second season-long loan spell after impressing in his maiden campaign – but ex-Spurs chief Sherwood is far from convinced.

Ceballos scored two goals and provided the same amount of assists in 36 appearances for Arsenal last season

Quoted by The Sun, Sherwood claimed he would replace Ceballos with Mesut Ozil – despite him hardly featuring since Mikel Arteta was appointed Gunners boss last December.

“Ceballos in my opinion is average,” began Sherwood. “I think he’s too weak for the Premier League and I think he’ll get found out this year.

“I think they need a little bit more guile in there. You need a player in there like Mesut Ozil in that middle of the pitch.

“When teams are scared of the pace of [Bukayo] Saka and [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang and [Alexandre] Lacazette and they want to defend deep, where’s the guile, where’s the player who is going to open the teams up? Ozil is the man to do that.”

Sherwood also said Arsenal will struggle at the back again this season – despite adding Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba to their ranks this summer, the former arriving from Lille and the latter back at the Emirates after his loan at Saint-Etienne.

He added: “For me they are still short defensively. Centre-backs, it’s always going to be their problem.

“They build from the back which is great, some of them can play, some of them can’t defend.”

Arteta is still on the hunt for new midfield recruits and is hoping to land both Houssem Aouar and Thomas Partey this summer.

However, the Gunners boss may have to choose just one to move for due to a lack of funds.

Alan Brazil believes Spurs will struggle to secure a top-four spot even with Gareth Bale at their disposal

It is understood the Spaniard would prioritise a move for Aouar if given a straight choice between the Lyon playmaker and Atletico Madrid midfielder Partey.

Lyon want in excess of £50m for the 22-year-old, but Arsenal are hoping to pay closer to £35m.

Any incomings depend on Arsenal selling players, with Lucas Torreira, Matteo Guendouzi, Sead Kolasinac and Sokratis Papastathopoulos among those made available for transfer this summer.
