David Luiz’s agent Kia Joorabchian rubbishes Arsenal 'fake news' and reveals potential talks over contract extension

The agent of Arsenal defender David Luiz has criticised the ‘FAKE NEWS’ reports surrounding the player’s future, and insists the Brazilian is keen to stay at the north London club.

Transfer gossip column last week claimed Luiz is set to leave the Gunners for free this summer, with the club keen to cut costs.

The Champions League winner signed a one-year contract with the option for another year when he joined Arsenal from London rivals Chelsea last summer on transfer deadline day.

David Luiz has returned to Arsenal training in preparation for the resumption of the 2019/20 Premier League season – but will he still be a Gunner next term?

It has been widely claimed that he hasn’t been offered to stay for that extra year in his contract, and is therefore set to depart.

Arsenal legend Martin Keown has even said it would be right for the Brazil international to leave after a tough year, but Kia Joorabchian insists the rumours aren’t true.

The agent has insisted ALL transfer talks at Arsenal have been placed on hold during the coronavirus hiatus, which includes the discussions over whether Luiz’s extension will be activated.

But he insists talks are due to resume in the coming weeks as Premier League clubs prepare to return to action and complete the 2019/20 season, and Luiz is very keen to stay and play under Mikel Arteta.

“What disappoints me is that there’s a lot of speculation, a lot of talk about David, and the fact of the matter is David has been very clear that he is very happy at Arsenal,” Joorabchian told talkSPORT host Jim White.

“He has very much enjoyed his time there, especially since Mikel has arrived. It looks like they have a very clear plan on how they want to take the club to the next level.

“David did an interview with Ian Wright where he said he’s extremely excited, the club is going in the right way, the philosophy and mentality right through the club is changing, and I think Mikel has enforced a philosophy that David really believes in – ‘we’re all one inside the club’.

“What’s happened is that David had a contract with Arsenal and during the pandemic there has been no discussions about contracts, renewals or anything.

“We haven’t discussed that contract and we always agreed that the most important thing at the moment is to get football back and finishing the current season, that is a very important step to stake as the first step.

“David signed a one-year contract with the option to extend and unfortunately the option to extend happened right in the middle of the pandemic.

David Luiz wants to stay at Arsenal, says his agent Kia Joorabchian

“Now we’re all coming out of this period, the players have just returned to training, and slowly , slowly before the season starts I’m sure we’ll deal with this matter at a good time.

“David has never said he doesn’t want to stay, or that he wants to leave, or anything.

“He thinks the club has a huge, huge prospect and he wants to win trophies. David has always been about winning trophies, all his career he’s done nothing but win trophies, everywhere he’s gone he’s won every title there is to win, and now he wants to do it.

“He took on the Arsenal project into his heart, he wants to go forward and he wants to win trophies, he doesn’t want to leave in a season where he has not won anything.”

Joorabchian also attacked the ‘lies’ in a recent transfer report that claimed the agent banked £6million by brokering Luiz’s move to the Emirates Stadium.

It was also claimed Luiz’s initial £8m signing, one that was at the time seemed like great business, has now cost the club a total of £24m after just one year at the club.

But Joorabchian has insisted that simply is not true.

He added on Monday: “Let me just address this issue, there was a report over the weekend a very bad journalistic report, very badly written with lies and fake information.

“You cannot let people just say and write fake information and let them get away with it, I think the intentions were very bad in that article, they were aimed at hurting people – they didn’t call me or David to verify their story.

Martin Keown suggests Arsenal should let David Luiz and Shkodran Mustafi go

“They wrote the agent’s fee was £6m and the total cost of David was £24m, and there was an underlying tone that the deal was not correct.

“The agent’s fee was nowhere near £6m, it was less than ten per cent of that figure.

“It was a very standard FA contract with an extremely low threshold on the numbers in terms of percentages, and we have proof.”
