Eddie Hearn, Gary Lineker and Arsenal legend hit back at Piers Morgan after claiming ‘nobody cares’ about Tokyo 2020 and ‘great champions’ don’t celebrate silver and bronze medals at Olympic Games

Eddie Hearn and Ray Parlour were among those to hit back at Piers Morgan over his claims that winning silver and bronze medals at the Olympics are not ‘worthy’ achievements.

The former Good Morning Britain host caused a stir on social media when he made the controversial claim, while also insisting ‘nobody cares’ about the ‘COVID-ravaged’ Tokyo 2020 Games.

Protests have occurred in the Japanese capital over the decision to go ahead with the Games, which were already delayed by a year, amid rising coronavirus cases.

Morgan clashed with Gary Lineker on Twitter with the England legend saying it is an ‘outstanding achievement’ to win an Olympic medal, no matter the colour.

Former Olympic boxer Paddy Barnes, who won Bronze medals at the Beijing and London Games, even offered to ‘fight’ Morgan.

He said: “Piers, I’ll fight you for my Bronze medals.”

Arsenal legend Parlour was another big-name in sport to disagree with Morgan.

He told Tuesday’s talkSPORT Breakfast: “There are a lot of journeys these guys have gone on, all the hard work… every four years you go and try to do better.

“To pick up any medal is an achievement. Obviously the gold medal is the one you all want.

“I remember going back to Arsene Wenger when we came second in the Premier League in 2001, he said, ‘second is no good’ and threw his medal away.

“You do remember silver and bronze medals if you’ve worked hard all your life to get to the Olympic Games.

“It’s a lot harder to compete against your fellow professionals to be the best in the world, it’s not just in England.

“Some people are very, very proud to get a medal.”

Meanwhile, top boxing promoter Hearn warned Morgan to be ‘careful’ over his views on the Olympics.

The Matchroom supremo told talkSPORT: “To win a medal at the Olympics is just the most incredible achievement.

“He’s got to be a little bit careful because he does have a huge platform and he shouldn’t really be sending that kind of message out.

“I’m not saying loads of the younger generation follow him anyway.

“I think it’s a case by case scenario. There are some elite athletes that frankly think silver and bronze medals are irrelevant.

“All sport has suffered behind closed doors and well done for getting it on. Piers moans about people moaning on social media, yet he moans all the time!

“In this situation, ‘oh, they shouldn’t do that, oh what’s the point?’ Why don’t you just turn around and go, ‘well done to the Olympics committee for allowing people to chase their dreams’.

“Do you know how hard people have worked towards these Olympics? I see it with the GB Boxing, years and years and years to try to get to the Olympics and it could’ve been taken away from them.

“They’ve got their opportunity, they’re amazing athletes and I just love the Olympics.”

So far, Tom Dean, Adam Peaty, Tom Daley, Matty Lee and Tom Pidcock have won gold for Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics.

Duncan Scott, Georgia Taylor-Brown, Alex Yee, Lauren Williams and Bradly Sinden have picked up silver medals, while Chelsie Giles has won a bronze medal.
