Ellen White scores stunning hat-trick but Great Britain crash out of Olympics women's football with defeat to Australia

Ellen White’s hat-trick wasn’t enough to see Great Britain through to the semi-finals of the Olympics women’s football as they crashed out of the tournament with a 4-3 defeat to Australia.

After Alanna Kennedy gave the Aussies the lead, GB hit back thanks to two quickfire White strikes. The quarter-final went to extra-time as Sam Kerr equalised in the dying minutes.

Hege Riise’s side were then given a penalty in the early moments of extra-time but Caroline Weir’s effort was well saved by Teagan Micah.

That knocked the stuffing out of GB as Australia raced to a 4-2 lead thanks to goals from Mary Fowler and Kerr.

White completed her hat-trick in the second half of extra-time with a well-taken header but GB’s Olympic dreams were shattered as they failed to find the equaliser.
