Canada's Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs (PROC) met on Tuesday to discuss the intimidation campaign by China against several members of Parliament.
Special Rapporteur David Johnston, who recommended against a public inquiry citing the sensitivity of the intelligence involved when he presented his initial report, took questions from MPs.
Already facing tough questions about his ties to the Liberal Party and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Johnston defended his impartiality.
"My relationship with Prime Minister Trudeau goes back to when our children were teenagers and during the course of almost 40 years - we had no meetings, we no dinners at one another's homes, no particular contact - was a friend of the father etc. but those were the extent of the contacts,” Johnston said.
He also defended his connection to the Trudeau Foundation as just a "member of the association - which is like shareholders and general meeting of the Trudeau Foundation - not a member of the board of directors," Johnston said.
When asked about his alleged lack of holding the government to account in the report, Johnston said the report "goes into quite considerable detail to say we have a system to deal with foreign interference that is not working and points out a number of areas of defects,” he said.
