Former Liverpool and Leeds star Harry Kewell set for Oldham Athletic job after Dino Maamria sacking

Harry Kewell is set to make his return to management and become the new Oldham Athletic boss, following the sacking of Dino Maamria.

The former Liverpool and Leeds winger has reportedly already agreed a deal to take charge of the League Two side, signing a one-year deal with the option for an additional year.

The Australian is expected to be named the new Oldham manager on Saturday

His appointment is set to be announced on Saturday, after Maamria was axed as head coach on Friday.

Former Stevenage boss Maamria, 49, became Oldham’s fifth manager in 12 months when he replaced Laurent Banide last September.

But he could only manage nine wins in 32 games for the Latics, as they finished the curtailed League Two season in 19th position on a points-per-game basis.

Maamria actually began the 2019/20 season as Stevenage manager, but was sacked after they failed to win in their opening seven league fixtures.

Frankie Bunn, Pete Wild, Paul Scholes and former Monaco boss Banide all managed Oldham in the 12 months preceding Maamria’s appointment.

And now it appears they have already found their sixth manager in just over a year, and seventh since new owner Abdallah Lemsagam took over in 2018, with Kewell set to make his return to the dugout.

A Champions League winner with Liverpool in 2005, Kewell last managed in November 2018 when he was sacked by Notts County after just 10 weeks in charge.

He began his coaching career by taking charge of Watford’s Under-21 side, before spending a year as manager of Crawley before his move to the Magpies.
