Frank Lampard recalls his father’s famous celebration at Elland Road in FA Cup

Elland Road holds a special place in the heart of Derby boss Frank Lampard ahead of his team’s trip to Leeds, which is LIVE on talkSPORT 2 on Friday evening.

It was the scene of his father’s most famous goal for West Ham, 39 years ago in an FA Cup semi-final replay against Everton.

In what he described as the proudest moment of his career, Frank Lampard senior sent the Hammers to Wembley with a diving header against and his celebration has become iconic.

He danced around the corner flag in delight, a move which his son emulated when he scored Chelsea’s winner against the Toffees in the 2009 FA Cup final.

The younger Lampard shares a close relationship with his father and often credits him as the most influential figure in his football career.

And the Rams manager hopes to create more memorable moments at Elland Road on Friday night.

“It means a lot for my dad,” Lampard told talkSPORT.

“I grew up watching old videos of him scoring and dancing around the corner flag. It’s his claim to fame.

“I actually did it at West Ham, but it was premature because we ended up losing 3-1 and I scored the first one!” he joked.

“I should’ve just calmly celebrated but I didn’t because I was 18 and an idiot.”

Derby will be out for revenge after Leeds battered them 4-1 at Pride Park earlier in the season.

Nonetheless, Lampard has enjoyed a bright start to his managerial career and victory over Marcelo Bielsa’s league leaders will take the Rams to within three points of the Championship’s automatic promotion places.

However, the Chelsea legend knows a tough test awaits his young side on Friday night.

“Leeds are top on merit, they’ve had a very good first half of the season, so it’s a massive test.

“If we can win and close that gap between Leeds and Norwich that’s a great thing, but in the bigger picture, the next few months to come will be very tough for us.

“It’ll be very tough for us, not just for me but for the team, because Leeds are a very good team.”

Leeds v Derby is live on talkSPORT 2 at 19:45 on Friday 11 January
