Gareth Bale isn’t the only one

Gareth Bale isn't the only one

So it turns out Gareth Bale actually asked Zinedine Zidane to be left out of the Real Madrid squad for their Champions League clash vs Manchester City.

Rumours suggest the Welshman was unprepared to sit on the bench as an unused substitute for the umpteenth time, so decided to stay in Spain.

It’s difficult to see Bale playing for Madrid again

“We know Zidane said he didn’t want to,” former Madrid president Ramon Calderon told talkSPORT. “But I imagine it’s a case of not wanting to be in the stands, as he’s been in the last 13 or 14 matches.”

That, or he had a round of golf booked in on Friday!

Either way, asking to be excused from the thing you’re paid £600,000-a-week to do isn’t exactly the best look.

With two years left on his deal, Bale seems content to just sit back and watch the money roll in, rather than take a pay cut elsewhere.

But has anyone considered that, perhaps, Bale just doesn’t like playing football? That was certainly the case for another former Tottenham player – Benoit Assou-Ekotto.

While discussing Bale on the talkSPORT Breakfast show, ex-Spurs striker Darren Bent revealed that Assou-Ekotto, his former teammate, couldn’t wait to get off the training ground.

Bent recalled: “Benoit Assou-Ekotto – remember him at Spurs? He hated football!

“He hated training, he hated everything. We’d turn up on a Saturday and he was really, really good.

“He was a very, very good player, but he couldn’t stand football.

“Maybe that’s why he was so good because he didn’t take it too seriously.

“But honestly, he was one of those players who couldn’t wait to get off the training ground quickly enough.”
