Gareth Southgate ‘found out tactically’ against Scotland with England boss facing criticism for leaving out Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham in Euro 2020 showdown

Gareth Southgate was schooled tactically by Scotland manager Steve Clarke as England were held to a drab 0-0 draw against the Auld Enemy at Wembley.

That’s according to talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino, amid fierce criticism of the Three Lions boss for leaving a wealth of attacking talent on the bench for the huge Euro 2020 clash.

Southgate urged frustrated fans to direct their anger at him following Friday’s hugely disappointing performance against Scotland

Scotland were left celebrating the draw like it was a win after suffocating England on Friday night, as the Three Lions missed a golden chance to progress to the last-16 after two games.

Southgate’s men only managed one shot on target as they struggled to create anything really of note against the Tartan Army’s stubborn defensive line.

Following the game, Southgate urged angry supporters to direct their fury at him, and not his players, after deciding to leave out the likes of Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham, while Bukayo Saka was not even in the squad.

Borussia Dortmund winger Sancho is yet to make an appearance at the Euros, despite currently being linked with a £75million move to Manchester United.

England fans were left baffled by Southgate’s team selection against the Scots, with Jose Mourinho telling talkSPORT the coach’s ‘fear of losing’ against their rivals kept defensive-minded duo Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips on the pitch while the squad’s attacking stars stayed in the dugout.

And with big questions now being asked of the manager, Cascarino says he was out-thought tactically by his rival boss.

“I thought Steve Clarke got one over Gareth in the tactics yesterday,” said the Weekend Sports Breakfast host.

“Scotland had a game plan and stuck with it. They defended brilliantly and fought like no other, which you’d expect in an England vs Scotland game.

“England struggled last night. There will be lots of questions asked, especially about why Harry Kane is having no impact, and people will want answers.”

Meanwhile, Andy Goldstein could’t disguise his frustration as he and Jason Cundy led the post-match discussion on talkSPORT.

The talkSPORT hosts were left scratching their heads why millions of pounds of attacking talent was left rotting on the bench while England were in desperate need of a creative spark.

“We were absolutely garbage,” said Goldstein.

“We didn’t do anything, we didn’t offer anything, we didn’t change anything up. He didn’t have any plan b.

Jose Mourinho says England didn’t do enough to beat Scotland

“Phil Foden coming off over Raheem Sterling I still can’t understand, Harry Kane coming off I get because he wasn’t playing well, but Marcus Rashford playing the number nine role instead of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who stayed on the bench? It was a head scratcher.

“Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham both staying on the bench, I didn’t get that either.

“I just thought England were incredibly poor. One shot on target in 90 minutes is nowhere near enough!

“It’s a real concern for England, because we looked appalling!”
