Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland paid a surprise visit to Ukraine on Saturday, touching down for top-level talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Trudeau's visit comes as Ukraine’s long-awaited counteroffensive officially begins. Crystal Goomansingh has more on the prime minister’s trip and the new funding Canada is pledging to help Ukraine fend off Russia’s latest offensive.

Winds in the area of Tumbler Ridge, B.C., have shifted, giving evacuated residents a bit of relief as a wildfire rages kilometres from their homes. Firefighters have been dousing houses with water to protect them from flames if the worst-case scenario were to occur. Rumina Daya reports.

To the political fallout in Ottawa, after David Johnston’s bombshell announcement Friday that he would resign as the special rapporteur investigating foreign interference in Canadian elections. Johnston had faced calls for him to resign over his ties to the prime minister and growing demand for a public inquiry. But his departure hasn’t brought the issue any closer to a solution. After triumphing in the Alberta election, Premier Danielle Smith’s new government will take the summer to develop policy before returning to the legislature in the fall. And if the makeup of her new cabinet is any indication, that policy could be fuelled by more right-wing ideology than the province has ever seen before. Heather Yourex-West reports.
