Harrogate Town promoted to Football League for first time in their history with 3-1 play-off final win over Notts County

Harrogate Town beat Notts County 3-1 in the National League play-off final to claim a place in the Football League for the first time in their history on Sunday.

It was delight for the victors but utter desolation for the defeated side, who were previously known as the oldest Football League club before their 2018-19 relegation.

Promotion meant everything to Harrogate Town

Goals from George Thomson and Connor Hall put the North Yorkshire team into a commanding lead during a first half at Wembley in which they also hit the woodwork through Aaron Martin.

Callum Roberts gave County hope as he pulled one back early in the second half.

However, Jack Diamond settled the contest 20 minutes from time before veteran Jon Stead hit the post late on.

This win marks Harrogate’s second promotion in three seasons.

The 106-year-old side will next month begin their first season in the Football League.

Meanwhile, 158-year-old Notts County must start again on the quest for promotion in the National League.
