Hong Kong police have detained several pro-democracy figures, including well-known activist Alexandra Wong, as they tried to commemorate the 34th anniversary of the bloody Tiananmen Square crackdown in China.

For years, Hongkongers have held candlelight vigils in Victoria Park on the anniversary. But since Beijing’s imposition of the national security law on Hong Kong in 2020 to quell dissent, the annual vigil has been banned and the organisers were charged under the law. Hundreds – by some estimates, more than 1,000 – were killed in 1989 when the Chinese government sent troops and tanks to Tiananmen Square in Beijing to break up peaceful protests.
