How Manchester United flop Memphis Depay could help Red Devils sign £100m-rated Borussia Dortmund star

The Jadon Sancho transfer saga has taken an intriguing twist, with reports Manchester United flop Memphis Depay may give his former club an edge in their pursuit of the Borussia Dortmund star.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to bring England international Sancho back to the Premier League this summer following his brilliant rise to stardom in Germany, where he has managed 34 goals and 43 assists in 99 games for BVB.

Sancho has been modelling Borussia Dortmund’s new kit for the 2020/21 Bundesliga season, but will be playing it in next term?

The deal has so far stalled over the fee, with Dortmund refusing to budge on their £109million valuation.

But that hasn’t stopped the Bundesliga giants putting out their feelers in search for a possible replacement, and reports in Germany claim they have set their sights on ex-Red Devil Memphis Depay.

The 26-year-old Dutchman has upped his game since leaving Old Trafford for Lyon, where he has 53 goals and 43 assists across four seasons, but is said to be keen to leave this summer after the side finished seventh in Ligue 1 and missed out on European football.

According to Bild, Dortmund are ready to sign Depay in the event their English ace leaves, but that would give Man United the upper hand in any transfer negotiations and could help them strike a deal for Sancho.

There’s no chance of Dortmund getting a deal done for Depay in secret while they negotiate Sancho’s fee with United.

That’s thanks to a clause United inserted into the deal when they sold the Dutchman, that the Premier League giants must be informed whenever a bid is made for him, which would keep them one step ahead of Dortmund.

Meanwhile, BVB’s sporting director Michael Zorc has this week spoken out about the speculation surrounding Sancho, saying he is hopeful the 20-year-old will remain at the club for another season.

Andy Goldstein urges Manchester United to sell Paul Pogba for £100m and get Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish, Kalidou Koulibaly and Harry Kane

“Jadon is an outstanding footballer with a quota that I have never seen at this age.

“I think it would even stand up to being one of the largest in the industry if you look at its age. I would be happy if he would still play with us this season. And that’s the current state of affairs.

“First of all we have to stick to the facts – and they are so, that we still have a contract with him until 2022.”
