Jordan Pickford makes two howlers as Everton beat Fleetwood in Carabao Cup and Kai Havertz nets Chelsea hat-trick

Jordan Pickford gifted Fleetwood Town two goals in Everton’s Carabao Cup third round clash as his performance again came into question.

It was a fairly routine win for Carlo Ancelotti’s side but the 5-2 scoreline did not tell the whole story.

Jordan Pickford made two poor errors against Fleetwood

Goalkeeper Pickford will take the headlines for two howlers that let Joey Barton’s side back into the game. The England No.1 will not want to watch the replays back.

Richarlison struck a first-half double with Everton sitting comfortably at the break with their 2-0 lead.

Pickford was caught in possession early in the second half and Mark Duffy was able to fire into an open net.

Alex Iwobi restored the Toffees’ advantage just a minute later but a further error by the goalkeeper gave the home side a glimmer of hope.

Pickford flapped at an acrobatic Callum Camps effort that was straight at him and, in reality, he should have done better.

The advantage was back to two goals when Bernard fired in after 73 minutes to all but end the tie once again.

Moise Kean wrapped up the result with a goal in the 94th minute to see Ancelotti’s side leave with a 5-2 victory.

Elsewhere, Kai Havertz got up and running for Chelsea as he netted a hat-trick in their 6-0 thrashing of Barnsley.

Tammy Abraham made the most of a start in the first team as he scored after just 19 minutes.

Havertz grabbed his first nine minutes later as the Blues looked more than comfortable at Stamford Bridge.

Ross Barkley got the third before the German playmaker added two more to put the tie well beyond the Championship club.

The sixth, and final, goal was scored by Olivier Giroud as Frank Lampard’s side made it safely through to the next round.
