They have since lost to Manchester City in the league but remain at the summit with a lead of four points before the weekend’s fixtures.

And Klopp was quick to praise his brilliant Dutch centre-back, 27, who has been the catalyst of their title charge this campaign with his cool defending in front of goalkeeper Alisson helping them keep the ball out of their own net, more often than not.

“He has so many things already good and so many he can still improve,” said Klopp. “Most important [right now] that he is fit. It’s all good.”

And the German reckon Van Dijk is so good he could player at an elite level for another decade or more.

“I think much more positively about my players than I talk to you about them,” continued the German.

“He can play until he’s 39 or so and there is a lot to come. He has outstanding potential.”
