Lionel Messi reached another remarkable landmark on Tuesday night by netting his 700th career goal during Barcelona’s clash with Atletico Madrid.

The Argentine superstar netted a cheeky Panenka penalty to reach 630 for the Catalans, which coupled with his 70 for Argentina, takes him into the prestigious 700 club.

Messi hits the incredible milestone on his 724th appearance for Barca, giving him a truly exceptional goals-per-game ratio of 0.87 over 16 years.

According to official statistics, only six men in the history of the game have crossed the 700 mark before Messi.

Messi joins Josef Bican (805 goals), Romario (772), Pelé (767), Ferenc Puskas (746), Gerd Muller (735) and Cristiano Ronaldo (728).

Bican’s record may be under threat with Messi only at 31 and Ronaldo continuing to set records aged 35, although unofficial statistics claim Bican and Pele have scored well over 1,000 goals.

Ronaldo hit 700 last October during a Euro 2020 qualifier for Portugal against Ukraine – his 973rd career match,

Meanwhile, Messi completed the feat significantly faster, taking only 862 games.

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner is also closing in on a combined 1,000 goals and assists for club and country, having created 294 goals over the course of his senior career.
