Manchester United should spend big on a striker like Robert Lewandowski rather than Jadon Sancho, says Rene Meulensteen

Manchester United are missing a world class centre-forward like Robert Lewandowski – and should make it their priority to sign one this summer.

That’s according to former first-team coach Rene Meulensteen, after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted United are ‘too far away from where we need to be and want to be.”

Jadon Sancho is thought to be high on United’s transfer wishlist, with a £50million-upwards move for the Borussia Dortmund winger mooted when transfer window reopens.

But Meulensteen, who worked with legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson for six years at Old Trafford from 2007 and helped the club win a host of major honours, has suggested United would be better off spending big money on a proven goalscorer.

Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford are both set to hit the 20-goal mark for the club this season, but the Dutchman believes they are not out-and-out strikers.

He told talkSPORT: “They brought [Odion] Ighalo in as a player who could help United in certain times and he’s actually done very, very well.

“But if you look at the other players there – Rashford, Martial, they’re not really out-and-out strikers.

[Mason] Greenwood, a young player coming up, it’s the same thing there.

“A lot of chances and goals can be created from the wide areas, Sancho is actually the same player.

“What I think Man United are missing is a striker of the calibre of Robert Lewandowski.

“Somebody up there who can hold the line, link play, but when it comes to finishing chances in and outside the box, that sort of player, they are hard to come by.

“Fifty million for Sancho, is that too much? For me, looking at what United have in those wide areas, is that where you want to strengthen?”

Rashford and Martial have scored 19 goals each this season, while 18-year-old forward Greenwood has netted 12 times.

Despite their success in front of goal, Solskjaer has warned his forwards he will not hesitant to replace them if their form drops off.

He said: “You need competition for places at Manchester United.

“If you think you’ve got a divine right to be playing every game and are doing so well that we’re not going to look for players to replace you, you’re in the wrong place.

“I’ve been here myself for so many years as a striker and Teddy Sheringham comes in, Dwight Yorke comes in, Ruud van Nistelrooy comes in, Wayne Rooney comes in.

“We’ve always got to look at improving, and if they don’t improve, we might have to look somewhere else to get better because we have to be better.

“We’re too far away from where we need to be and want to be.”
