‘Mike Tyson came screaming towards me and I thought don’t make eye contact’, recalls Spencer Oliver of one training camp with the former heavyweight boxer

Mike Tyson is an enigma to say the least.

As the Baddest Man on the Planet in the late 80’s and early 90s, Tyson was feared as much outside of the ring as he was in it.

His personality shone through – for better or worse – through many interviews down the years and you won’t find many who wanted to be on the wrong side of the former undisputed heavyweight champion.

After all, this is a man who recently referred to inflicting pain upon other people as ‘orgasmic’.

Spencer Oliver found himself in this position 20 years ago, as Britain’s former European bantamweight champion, recalled to talkSPORT.

“When Mike Tyson boxed Lou Savarese in Scotland many years ago, in 2000 I think, I was in his camp and I spent a bit of time around him,” he explained at the launch of his new online at home training programme Get ON It with Johnny Nelson.

“He was a very erratic character, his mood swings were unbelievable. One day he was so high and the next he’d be mad.

“I vividly remember him coming out of the ring one day and screaming towards me and I was like wow, I don’t want to make eye contact with this guy. He’s crazy!

“But he’s in a better place in his life right now.”

Speaking of what Tyson is up to right now, he is preparing for his comeback fight, where he will take part in an eight-round exhibition contest against another former great in Roy Jones Jr.

‘It’s orgasmic sometimes’ – Mike Tyson tells Joe Rogan he used to get erections from boxing when he was younger as he prepares to face Roy Jones Jr

Oliver says, like many of us, he’ll end up watching the bout but isn’t looking forward to it.

“Would I watch Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr? Yes I would. Am I glad that they’re doing it? No, I’m not. If I’m totally honest.

“They’re two fighters way past their best getting in there for whatever reason, I just hope it isn’t too much of a disappointment.”
