Model Tahnee Atkinson’s super chill wellness philosophy is the kind we can get around

Whether she’s at home or travelling for work, model and brand ambassador Tahnee Atkinson’s outlook to staying healthy and fit could not be more straightforward. Long walks and infrared saunas? Sign us up.

In our editorial series My Healthy Habits, we chat to inspiring individuals about their health and wellness routines, where they share everything from their fitness routines to their beauty go-to’s and midweek meals. Pip Edwards’ is all about Taco Tuesday, Maddison Brown practices oil pulling and Magdalena Roze sticks to ocean swims.

While you often read about the strict and regimented routines of some models, Tahnee Atkinson’s approach is super down-to-earth. Ahead of launching The Iconic’s collaboration with BINGE, a line of clothes designed for relaxing and aptly named Inactivewear, we had a chat with Tahnee about how she likes to start the day and her preference for low-impact exercise.

Outline your morning ritual for us…

My morning ritual revolves around skincare, for me, it sets the tone for the day. As soon as I wake up, I wash my face with icy cold water, then apply all my creams and sunscreen. I then make a coffee and smoothie, catch up on emails and plan my day.

What about your nighttime routine?

Evenings are my time to unwind. I like to put on my Inactivewear, cook dinner, and relax with my best friend, who I live with. We often put on a documentary but usually end up talking all the way through it.

If I’ve been shooting during the day, I put on a face mask to nourish my skin after all the makeup. I then go to bed at a decent hour, to make sure I’m well-rested each morning.

Last thing you do before you go to sleep?

Read a book or watch something light on TV. At the moment I’m watching Little Britain on Binge, it’s quite old now but I still find it hilarious.

Talk us through your supplement intake, do you take any collagen, green powders, wellness elixirs, etc?

I always take health supplements. It’s quite dry and cold at the moment so I’m taking a lot of omega 3 to keep my skin moisturised.

I’m also using Imbibe beauty supplements. I add the miracle collagen powder to my green smoothies every morning and take the beauty renewal liquid mid-afternoon when I feel like something sweet. It’s a probiotic but tastes really good.

What is your weeknight dinner philosophy? What’s a normal meal look like?

I love cooking and dinner is my favourite! I like to go to bed with a full stomach so dinner is usually the biggest meal of my day. During the week I tend to alternate between a few different meals:

  • Roasted vegetables.
  • Tofu salad with pan-fried, seasoned nuts and seeds for extra taste and texture.
  • Green soup topped with fresh herbs, parmesan cheese and a side of bread and butter.
  • Pasta. I like to make a sauce with lots of vegetables like zucchini and eggplant.

What health/body treatment is regular for you and why?

I treat myself to a facial every six weeks. I love Melanie Grant. I also go to the infrared sauna at The Shelter Double Bay a lot. I love the ambience.

Do you practice meditation?

I recently started using the Headspace app. I really enjoy it, especially if I have a lot going on. Each session is only 10 minutes, so it’s great for beginners. I wouldn’t say I’ve mastered it yet but I definitely feel more clear and calm every time I do it.

What’s your approach to more alternative forms of beauty and wellness practices?

I love lighting scented candles. Ecoya is my favourite and I like to use a dehumidifier with peppermint essential oils just before bedtime.

What do you do to help your body recover after a workout/hectic week?

I prefer to go for long walks than to do intense exercise, so the best recovery for me is usually just relaxation. My favourite way to relax is just to chill on the sofa, and it’s even better when I’m exhausted and know I’ve earned some downtime. If I feel like I need something more remedial, I’ll get a deep tissue massage or head to the infrared sauna.

Talk us through your fitness approach.

I do a mix of pilates or barre classes three times a week with the Movement Society. I travel a lot so I bought their compact Toning Toolkit and take it with me every time I go on a trip. My favourite workouts are the 30 minute express classes; the burn is real but so are the results!

Do you regularly listen to/like any wellness podcasts? If so, which ones?

In general, I prefer to read because I’m less likely to get distracted. That said, I’m currently learning about psychology, and there are some really interesting podcasts that supplement the learning. At the moment, I’m listening to Making Sense with Sam Harris, some of the episodes are incredible, I find them so insightful.

Do you use any wellness technology you use or Apps to monitor your health/fitness/sleep?

I love falling asleep to white noise, I can’t sleep without my fan on, so when I’m travelling for work and there’s no fan, which is often the case in hotels, I use the Rain Rain app. It has all sorts of soothing sounds to help you fall asleep. Hilariously, there’s actually a ‘ceiling fan’ track, but I also like the thunderstorm track.

What’s your trick to making it through the 3pm slump?

When I’m on set, 3pm is usually when the lollies come out. I don’t like to eat a lot of sugar but a few pieces always get me through the rest of the day. On my days off, I like to get up and get moving, whether it’s a long walk along the coast or just running errands.

An average Sunday night looks like…

Sunday is my day of rest. I use it to recalibrate ahead of a new week. Sunday nights are usually spent cooking, taking a bit longer to prepare it, and watching shows on Binge. I’m currently binging the Euphoria series.
