How will the coronavirus pandemic end?

A global initiative will supply two rapid antigen tests to low and middle income countries, which take between 15 and 30 minutes to produce results, with one even already receiving emergency approval from the WHO.

A new COVID-19 test that produces results in 15 to 30 minutes will be rolled out globally, potentially slowing down the coronavirus rate and saving thousands of lives.

The rapid antigen tests from two companies, which look like a pregnancy test with two blue lines displayed for a positive result, will firstly be supplied to low and middle income countries for $5 each or less.

One test has already received emergency approval from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the other is expected to receive approval shortly.

Wealthy countries that have signed up to the Access to Covid tools initiative (ACT accelerator), will also be able to order the tests. Germany has already ordered tests, with France and Switzerland following suit.

Peter Sands, executive director of the Global Fund, said: “This is the ACT-Accelerator in action. It is proof that by working together at a massive global scale, we can develop and deploy a vital new tool to help contain and fight the pandemic. This is not just a new test – it’s the money and the deployment plan to get it to where it’s needed, fast. This is the power of global collaboration.”

The two companies claim their tests are approximately 97 per cent accurate in optimal conditions, dropping to between 80 and 90 per cent in real-world conditions.

There are several rapid antigen tests available for sale online, however these two are the first to meet the WHO’s specifications and approval.
