After an injury riddled start to the campaign that saw him retire with a hip injury in the Australian Open and skip Indian Wells and Miami, Nadal is hoping to make a big impression on the clay.

Having led Spain to the Davis Cup semi-finals following his role in the victory over the Germany, Nadal has points to defend.

With Roger Federer sitting out this stage of the season, Nadal, a 10-time champion at Monte Carlo, will take top billing at the blue riband event which also includes Novak Djokovic who won the competition in 2013 and 2015.

Nadal, who recently returned to world No 1, has a 100-point advantage over Federer at the top of the rankings and he needs to win Monte Carlo if he is to retain his position at the summit.

The 31-year-old is beginning his preparations on the red dirt ahead of the French Open where his dominance has been unparalleled.

And he insists that he wants to do well at Monte Carlo, particularly because he has yet to finish an event he has played in this year.

When asked whether he’s still motivated coming back as a 10-time champion, Nadal said: “No for me it’s the same every year.

“I come back with the same passion and same motivation to play my best.

“And I need to get the best results possible especially this year as I haven’t finished one event yet, so hopefully this will be my first.”

Nadal has been given a bye for round two as he is seeded for the tournament.
