Real Madrid linked with Manchester United transfer target Pau Torres as club seek Sergio Ramos replacement, which could leave door open for Raphael Varane move

Real Madrid need a new centre-back to replace Sergio Ramos and are said to be looking at Villarreal’s Pau Torres.

The defender has previously been linked with Manchester United but Spanish newspaper AS report he has now been targeted by Real following a good campaign with his club where he won the Europa League.

Real have signed David Alaba, but the departure of Ramos after 16 years at the club threw a spanner in the works for Bernabeu bosses, causing them to rethink their stance on Raphael Varane.

The 28-year-old France defender has a year left on his contract and was said to be keen to leave, with United interested and Real willing to listen to offers. Varane can speak to clubs about a free transfer next January if he does not sign a new deal.

Real’s move for Torres, though, could be good for United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as he seeks to rebuild his squad starting with Varane if he is allowed to leave Madrid. A central midfielder, a right winger and a striker are all said to be on his wishlist in addition to a centre-back.

The Manchester Evening News wrote United are willing to spend £50million on him, but believe the debt-ridden LaLiga side want £80m.

Ramos was also linked to United, but it is thought Paris Saint-Germain will be his next stop, though his former manager Jose Mourinho thinks he would shine in the Premier League, likening his situation to Thiago Silva’s.

“He is even more physical than Thiago to cope with the Premier League demands,” the Special One told talkSPORT. “He is very good in the air.

“I have no doubts he can play with the intensity and demands of the Premier League.”
