Thousands kick off “Climate Week” in New York ahead of UN General Assembly

Tens of thousands of protesters marched through the streets of Midtown Manhattan on Sunday ahead of the U.N. General Assembly.

At a protest rally, Democratic U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez addressed the crowd, calling on world leaders to end the use of fossil fuels.

Sunday’s protests are part of a week-long international effort by Climate Group, a non-profit aimed at driving climate change action and stopping global warming. More than 500 protests are planned across 54 countries.

Organizers have said they expect a global turnout of more than a million people.
