Timo Werner has revealed that money played no part in his decision to join Chelsea – insisting he rejected several top clubs in favour of the Blues as they offered him the ‘best package’.

Liverpool had long been front-runners to sign the Germany international but pulled out due to the financial impact of coronavirus, and Stamford Bridge chiefs subsequently swooped in to agree a £47.5million fee with RB Leizpig last month.

Werner has been in sensational form this season and has made his name as one of Europe’s finest strikers, scoring 34 goals in all competitions to prove his quality in the final third.

“I agreed [to join Chelsea] a few weeks ago,” Werner told Sportbuzzer.

“The whole thing was quite unproblematic because I had a lot of time to think about it before the coronavirus period.

‘It’s no secret that there were several offers.”

When asked if moves to Liverpool or Manchester United were ever on the cards, Werner replied: “It could have been. There were some top clubs who fought for me.

“The entire Chelsea package was the best for me, my game and my career.

“Money played the smallest role. For me money was never a decisive factor, [if it was] then I could have gone to China.

“Chelsea is a top destination in European football. There is a really good team at Chelsea with high quality, we want to challenge at the top.

“I haven’t regretted my decision for a second.”

Werner appears to have ditched Leipzig already despite their Champions League campaign not resuming until next month, as he wants to link up with his new teammates right away.

“I am in the process of arranging that plan now,” said Frank Lampard as he discussed how Werner and fellow summer signing Hakim Ziyech will spend their time with the Blues until the elongated 2019/20 Premier League season ends.

“They are also in different positions in the fact that Hakim hasn’t played for a long time because of the Dutch league situation and Timo finished at the weekend.

“We will formulate a plan for them that will look slightly differently individually.

“We will decide in the meantime at Cobham in the training ground whether that means mixing with the squad or whether that means some physical work in the shorter term for themselves.”
