Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau held a press conference in New York on Thursday, where he took questions about Canada's tensions with India. This comes as Canada is adjusting its diplomatic staff presence in India, and New Delhi is halting visa services in Canada as a spat over the murder of a Canadian citizen deepens.

"We're not looking to provoke or cause problems, but we are unequivocal around the importance of the rule of law and unequivocal about the importance of protecting Canadians and standing up for our values," he said. "That's why we call upon the government of India to work with us to establish processes, to uncover the truth of the matter, and to allow justice and accountability to be served."

Trudeau doubled down on claims that his government has "credible" intelligence that the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government was linked to the killing of 45-year-old Sikh activist, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, in British Columbia.

Nijjar, a prominent Canadian Sikh leader who advocated for the Khalistan movement, was shot dead on June 18 outside the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey, B.C. Trudeau hasn't elaborated further on what evidence Canadian intelligence agencies may have.
