Speaking during question period on Wednesday, Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had a heated exchange over the rise of housing costs and the appropriate steps needed to combat this issue plaguing Canadians.

“The cost of an average mortgage has doubled. The cost of an average down payment has doubled… Double trouble,” Poilievre said. “Why doesn’t [Trudeau] stop giving the money to gatekeepers and start getting out of the way so we can start building affordable homes?”

Trudeau retaliated by saying the only plan Conservatives have on housing is to “pick fights” with municipalities and provinces to ensure cuts to programs that would prevent Canadians from getting homes. Trudeau also claimed that Conservatives have no housing plan, while Poilievre accused Trudeau of “plagiarizing” his plans.

Earlier that day, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. (CMHC) released the results of the survey that polled some 4,000 mortgage holders in January about how their attitudes have changed amid the rapid rise in interest rates over the past year. Almost three-quarters of all mortgage holders (74 per cent) said they have already been affected or expect to be impacted by the higher rates, according to CMHC.
